Adenomyosis occurs when endometrial tissue grows into the myometrium, the muscular layer of the uterus. This ectopic tissue behaves like normal endometrium, responding to estrogen by shedding and bleeding during menstruation. However, trapped within the myometrium, this tissue cannot exit the body, leading to accumulated blood and extensive lesions. Symptoms include dysmenorrhea (painful periods), heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, infertility, and anemia.

Role of Contraceptive Pills in Treating Adenomyosis

Since adenomyosis is estrogen-dependent, contraceptive pills, which contain progesterone, can help manage the condition. Progesterone inhibits estrogen secretion, thus reducing endometrial growth and alleviating symptoms such as dysmenorrhea and heavy menstrual flow. While these pills can control symptoms and the progression of adenomyosis in the short term, they do not cure the condition.

Safety and Suitability of Short-acting Contraceptives

The hormones in contraceptive pills are synthetic but closely resemble the body’s natural hormones. They effectively regulate the menstrual cycle and provide reliable contraception. However, not all women should use them. Contraindications include:

Duration of Contraceptive Use for Adenomyosis

The length of time a patient should take short-acting contraceptives for adenomyosis varies, typically ranging from 3 to 6 months. The exact duration depends on the severity of symptoms and individual response to treatment:

- Mild Symptoms/Early Stage: Short-term medication might suffice, with a lower risk of recurrence after stopping.
- Severe Symptoms/Advanced Stage: Longer treatment may be necessary to manage the disease and prevent relapse.

It's crucial for patients to follow their doctor's guidance on the duration of medication to avoid disrupting recovery.

Besides contraceptive pills, other treatments and lifestyle adjustments can help manage symptoms:
